Our company is passionate about bringing modern, sustainable and organic gardening to the landscape maintenance industry.

About Founder/ CEO

Helen Knox

Growing up in Richmond on a small egg farm, Helen fell in love with nature. With the influence of her father's passion for ornamental plants and her grandfather's passion for food crops, Helen found her career in gardening.

Helen has been a certified horticulturist for more than 25 years now and recently received certification as an Organic Master Gardener. With her interests on how our food is grown, she has obtained her PDC permaculture design certificate. Most recently Helen took a soil health course in Regina Saskatchewan and is eager to put her new found knowledge to work.

Beyond Green Garden Service

Helen Knox, president of Urban Landscapers Ltd. always tinkered in the garden and had a dream of one day owning her own company. So when she had an opportunity to maintain a strata she began the process of becoming an entrepreneur. Helen was awarded two contracts and embraced them with enthusiasm, however, became pregnant that same year. So during the first 9 years of ownership Helen grew her business along with her family.

Urban Landscapers Ltd.

Business had grown enough that Helen had to make a decision to incorporate. She was forced to change the business name so Urban Landscapers Ltd. was created. With a creative new logo and great new look, business grew exponentially.

Organic Sustainable Methods

With many cities banning pesticide use Helen began looking at alternative ways to keep sites looking great without the use of convenient chemicals. The more she learned about non chemical gardening the more she began to see the intelligence in organic sustainable gardening methods. Helen set out to educate herself and received an Organic Master Gardening certificate. Helen also received a Permaculture Design Certificate which combines holistic design principals that imitates nature.

Doubled Site Contracts

This year saw a huge influx of sites eager to embrace a healthier garden with no pesticide use because of their awareness of how dangerous pesticide use is. Small children and dogs can be exposed to pesticide residue simply by walking through the property and touching plants and soil

Soil Health Approach

After taking a soil health course in Regina Saskatchewan, Urban Landscapers focus this year is to concentrate on bringing up soil health. Healthy soil, that is healthy soil biology with balanced nutrients, feeds and nourishes plants so they can better resist insect damage and disease. Lawns grown in healthy soil will dominate and suppress weed encroachment.
